The Story Behind Project 500

In 2023, we lost my Aunty Amanda after a short battle with cancer. During her battle she was supported by the staff at the Maggie's Centre in Dundee.

The idea for Project 500 came from me wanting to raise money for Maggie's, to help support the amazing work they do for families that are affected by cancer.

“This is the biggest challenge I've ever put myself through, but I will give everything to get to the finish at The Mall, raising as much money as I can for this amazing charity.”

I'd originally thought about just running the London Marathon for Maggie's, however wanted to challenge myself further whilst also trying to raise as much money and awareness of the work Maggie's do and establishing a personal connection to the challenge. That's where the idea of running the 500+ miles from Dundee to London and then completing the London Marathon came from.

Supporting Maggie's Cancer Care Centres

Warm, uplifting architectural spaces built alongside NHS hospitals, providing free emotional, practical, and psychological support for anyone affected by cancer.

A Sanctuary Beside the Hospital

When Maggie Keswick Jencks was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1993, she realized that hospital corridors — while clinically essential — offered little comfort or peace for patients and families grappling with overwhelming news.

She believed people need light-filled, calm spaces where they can ask questions, find psychological guidance, or simply sit with a cup of tea. Today, Maggie's operates over 24 award-winning centres across the UK, all offering professional support completely free of charge.

“Above all what matters is not losing the joy of living in the fear of dying.”
